  1. Mary T. McConnelly

I purchased a copy of this book at a conference. Our part-time faculty population includes those who are new to teaching as well as those who have been working at the college for quite some time. This book is a collection of pieces from administrators, faculty and others who focus on helping both the new and returning part-time faculty member become more comfortable and proficient in the classroom. There is also a section which touches on teaching online, and it is a solid introduction to the topic, but not a definitive guide to teaching distance ed courses. I would definitely say that Handbook 2 is an excellent resource for those faculty who have some experience in the classroom already (returning part-timers).

For new part-timers, particularly for those part-time faculty coming from industry, the book’s focus on strategies and matters pedagogical could be a bit over-whelming, particularly without some sort of formal orientation or mentoring program in place. However, as a pairing with a structured introduction to teaching and classroom management, this book would be excellent for part-time faculty new to a teaching program. Returning part-time faculty will find many helpful teaching tips and suggestions and could surely refer back to the various essays throughout the course of any given semester.
